Interview : The Hacker (eng)

Saturday 24th Sept, Renaissance Man, Théo Gravil and The Hacker were doing a show in Rennes. We took the chance to present you an old old interview, done at the "Astro gets naked" night (Brest). Not the 2011 edition though, but the 2010! ! ISpecial interview for people who say "I don't know who The Hacker is" (don't worry, we didn't before either). We had fun, and not just a bit.

 

1. Could you introduce yourself for our readers who don't know who you are please?
   So my stage name is The Hacker, I am from Grenoble, I'm 37 years old and I make electronic music since roughly 15 years now. I am mainly known for my project with Miss Kittin, and also for some side projects alone, which are more of a techno and dark electro kind, let's say. More or less...

 

2. You are a lot quoted as a pioneer and anchor of the techno music scene. Why do you think it is so?
   Simply because it's been a while since I am in the business. I really started at the beginning of the 90s, when rave parties appeared, so around 92/93. So I think it's because of that that people look at me like a pioneer and maybe because I am old! That must be it! (laughs)

 

3. You created your own record company "Good Life". According to you, what are the advantages and inconvenients of having your own label?
   The advantages are that you can publish the music that you want, that you like without asking yourself too many questions. The inconvenients are that these are small structures so it is always a bit difficult to promote and all because it costs money and things like that. This may be the inconvenient but in the mean time it still is something interesting to do, artistically speaking I think. Trying to develop things that you really like, and then either it works or not you can see, and generally it's more positive than negative.

What was the motivation to create this label? because you couldn't find the structures that you liked?
   Just the envy of publishing the music that we really like.

Could you tell us what you are most proud of?
   The music that we made, my colleagues - I want to say - and me : Oxia, Kiko, these are people from Grenoble too - my own stuff, ... I am proud of it all actually, there's no particular thing.

 

4. You should be releasing a new album soon...
   So I've heard!
So have we read too! And it should be named "Black Hole"?
   No, this one is out! Black Hole has been released no so long ago! It's just a EP like that, so there are 3 songs and it has been released on a label called White Noise. It's the label of an english dj, rather well known, called Dave Clark and the last stracks I did are quite representative of the music I make nowadays.

And it works quite well for you right now, we have seen on your facebook page. Your first fans seem quite happy that you can go back to a sound more...
   Yeah a harder sound maybe. It's true it's working quite well yes!

 

5. Do movies influence the way you make music, and if yes which ones?
   There are a few things that influenced me, but maybe I don't have a particular exemple in mind. Perhaps it is less true nowadays, but a few years ago I was very influenced by everything science-fiction and fantasy actually, because they had this atmosphere that matched with myself; always a bit mysterious, a bit dark and I liked all that. There are some soundtracks from the 60/70s that I like a lot because they have the first synthesizers, the first electronic sounds and I like this kind of atmosphere. There are also movies that influenced whith their own atmosphere, it could be the first Alien, Village of the Damned and old science-fiction thing, it could also be the first Nosferatu in the 20s, in black and white. This kind of things I like.

 

6. What tracks are you listening to nowadays?
   Right now, probably there is no track in particular, but I listen to a lot of techno whereas strangely it has been some time, I mean that I have been listenning to it at home. There is a band that I have been listenning to since 25 years and probably that I will listen to all my life, it's Depeche Mode. I am kind of non-stop on that right now.

 

7. Do you have some artists fomr the german scene to advice?
    Eeeeeeh, no! (laughs) No but yes, I mean I exagerate but right now I am...

Not especially from nowadays scene, but like in general?
   Then there is DJ Hell from the Gigolo Records with who I have been working, and with who we started with Miss Kittin. For me, he is still somebody very important because he's the one that discovered us, because we signed in germany with Miss Kittin at the beginning and musically speaking, it is him who made me, not discover things, but it is him who made me realise, who said "use your own influences", Depeche Mode and all, and stop trying  copying the other techno guys, which was what I did a bit at the beginning. He told me to make something a bit more personnal, and that's why he has been somebody important, and somebody that I like as a dj, musician and producer. There are some other people too : Sven Väth, Anthony Rother, people like that. But what is happening now in Germany, globally I think it's "very boring", this sort of minimal house where nothing is happening, it is the same thing for hours, it's not appealing to me, it's boring me actually. The bases of the techno music come from there. A band like Kraftwerk, I don't know if you have heard of them, there are like the pioneers of the electronic music, and there were making almost only techno music in the 70s. So it is true that electronic music and Germany is a long story. More than in France, but this is another debate. But it's true that there is something very strong there for electronic music.

There is a german dj girl who started her own label, I can't remember her name...
   There are a lot you know! (laughs) Ellen Allien?

Yes, that's her! You can hear a lot of talking about her still...
   Yeah, I like what she does by the way. There are people like that that I like. I said Germany was boring, but there's a lot of people I like. Ellen Allien I like a lot what she does actually, DJ Hell and all... There are some interesting stuffs, we should'nt be too general but globally the "buzz" sound in Germany makes me bored.


So now we are gonna ask questions more...
   personnal? (laughs)
No! less serious and more crazy...

 

8. Is the glass half empty or half full?
   I prefer to say that it is half full.

Actually, this question is a reference to yor label "Good Life".
   Why?

We got into some jokes, we thought it was quite a positive name...
   Yeah, right, we picked this name Good Life, so it's old right, because we were saying to ourselves : look at the djs' lives, fun nights out, that's the life, that's it... It's also a reference to one of the first techno tracks that's called Good Life, something from Detroit in the 80s. But right now I am in a positive side of my life, we could say, so I want to say yes, the glass is half full.

 

9. Did people though you were a computer hacker at the beginning? or even now? How do you react?
   Yes it still happens a bit. I don't care, it's understandable and it's even funnier as I am lame in computing. If I took this name it is for the relation to one of my favorite techno artists, Jeff Mills. There is one of his first tracks which is called The Hacker, I thought It sounded nice so there, nothing to do with computers. I can only send emails, go on Facebook, and that's all. Better than nothing!

 

10. Do you know the recipe of the "gratin dauphinois"?
   Aaaaaaaaaah! I only know you need : potatoes, fresh cream, a bit of milk. Now, about the cooking time and all, I can't tell you...
 

No personal ingredient to make it better?
   No no no, you have to be extremely faithful, otherwise it is no "gratin dauphinois", if you start adding cheese and stuff, it has nothing to do with it anymore!

 

11. I had another question about the tours, but you kind of answered already. Isn't it depressing to be on the roas, because for djs it mostly at night that you are playing, so it is a different rhythm to take and when it stops...  
   Generally no. It is another rhythm to adapt to, but it's been almost 15 years that I am doing it and I don't we are in a position to complain actually. After , it is also a choice of lifestyle, but I am ready to live it 15 more years, It's ok! There's no problem! (laughs)

 

12. Tonight is the official party for the release of the festival's program, did you have time to take a look? It starts with Jeff Mills, a little French Touch N°2, ... 

   Globally the program is really good, after what you talk about the french touch n°2, it is not that much appealing to me. Maybe it means I am an old shrimp!

   Most of them don't know how to mix, their gigs aren't live, it's all swagger. But in the mean time I have the feeling that audiences don't care about that. Anyway, you tell yourself I don't know what to think about it, but in the mean time they have the right to do what they want. It is not appealing for me musically speaking, Daft Punk's GQ I already know, I undersand, but it is not for me.

 

And tonight there is Mondkopf opening for you, do you know him? He doesn't exactly have the same style...
   I know his name but I haven't really heard his music yet, so it will be for tonight. Why not actually, I have nothing against it. But let's be honest, between boring minimal house in Germany and french touch n°2, I can't relate myself to it at the moment, I'm getting a little dull ... So voilà! (laughs)

Demain soir concert à Rennes avec Renaissance Man, Théo Gravil et The Hacker.  (!)

A cette occasion on vous ressort une interview de derrière les fagots, réalisée lors de la soirée Astro se fout à Poil (Brest - 07/05 - La Suite), non pas de l'édition 2011, mais 2010!! Interview spéciale neuneus "je sais pas qui c'est The Hacker" (mais on étaient pareilles avant). Ca balance et pas qu'un peu.

1. Pourrais-tu te présenter pour les lecteurs qui ne te connaissent pas s'il-te plait?

   Alors mon nom d'artiste c'est The Hacker, je suis de Grenoble, j'ai 37 ans et je suis dans la musique électronique depuis maintenant une quinzaine d'années. Je suis essentiellement connu pour mon projet avec Miss Kittin, et aussi des trucs solos à côté que je fais qui sont plus dans un style techno et électro un peu dark on va dire. En gros...

2. On te cite beaucoup comme pionnier et pilier de la scène techno. A ton avis, pourquoi ?

   Tout simplement parce que cela fait un moment que je suis là dedans. J'ai commencé vraiment au début des années 90, quand les raves sont apparues, 92/ 93 par là donc je pense que c'est peut-être pour ça que l'on me considère comme une sorte de pionnier et puis parce que je suis vieux! Ca doit être ça ! (rires)

3. Tu as créé ton propre label « Good Life ». Quels sont pour toi les avantages et les inconvénients d’avoir son propre label ?
   Les avantages c'est que l'on peut sortir la musique que l'on veut, que l'on aime sans se poser de questions. Les inconvénients c'est que ce sont des petites structures donc c'est toujours un peu difficile pour faire de la promo et tout parce que cela coute de l'argent des choses comme ça. C'est peut-être ça l'inconvenient mais en même temps ça reste quelque chose d'intéressant à faire artistiquement je pense. Essayer de développer les trucs que l'on aime vraiment et puis après ça marche, ça ne marche pas, on voit et globalement c'est plus positif que négatif.
 

Qu'est-ce qui a motivé la création de ce label?  Parce que tu ne trouvais pas de structures qui te plaisaient ?  

   Juste l'envie de sortir la musique que l'on aime vraiment.

Est-ce que tu pourrais nous citer des musiques que tu es le plus fier d'avoir sorti?  

   La musique que l'on a fait, mes collaborateurs, j'ai envie de dire, et moi : Oxia, Kiko, ce sont des gens de grenoble aussi - mes trucs à moi, ... je suis fier de l'ensemble en fait, il n'y a pas de truc en particulier.

4. Tu vas normalement bientôt sortir un nouvel album... 

   Il parait! 

Il parait, on a lu aussi! Et il s'appellerait "Black Hole"...

   Ah non ça c'est sorti! Black Hole est sorti il n'y a pas longtemps! C'est juste un maxi comme ça, donc il y a 3 titres et c'est sorti sur un label qui s'appelle White Noise. C'est le label d'un dj anglais qui est assez connu qui s'appelle Dave Clark et les derniers morceaux que j'ai fait sont assez représentatif de la musique que je fais en ce moment oui.

Ca marche plutôt bien pour toi d'ailleurs, on est allées voir sur la page facebook. Tu as l'air d'avoir des fans de la première heure qui sont assez contents que tu puisse revenir à un son un peu plus... 

   Ouais un son un peu plus dur peut être. C'est vrai ça marche plutôt bien ouais!

5. Est-ce que les films influencent ta façon de faire de la musique, et si oui lesquels ?

   Il y a quelques trucs qui m'ont influencé mais je n'ai peut-être pas d'exemple de film en particulier. Peut être moins maintenant, mais il y a quelques années j'étais très influencé par tout ce qui était science fiction et fantastique en fait parce qu'il y avait une ambiance qui me correspondait; toujours un peu mystérieux, un peu dark et tout ça j'aimais bien. Il y a des bandes sons de l'époque des années 60/70 que j'aime beaucoup parce que ce sont les premiers synthés, les premiers sons électroniques et j'aime bien ce genre d'ambiance. Après il y a des films qui m'ont influencé par leur atmosphère propre;  ça peut être le premier Alien, Le Village des Damnés c'est un vieux truc de science fiction, ça peut être aussi le premier Nosferatu dans les années 20, en noir et blanc. Ce genre de trucs j'aime bien.

6.  Quels morceaux écoutes-tu en ce moment ?

   En ce moment il y a peut-être pas un morceau en particulier, mais j'écoute beaucoup de techno alors que bizarrement ça faisait un petit moment que je n'en écoutais plus trop; enfin chez moi je veux dire. Il y a un groupe que j'écoute depuis 25 ans et je pense que je l'écouterais toute ma vie c'est Depeche Mode. Voilà je suis un peu en boucle là dessus en ce moment.


7. As-tu des artistes de la scène allemande à conseiller ?

   Euuuuuh non! (rires) Enfin oui non, j'exagère mais en ce moment je suis...

Pas spécialement de la scène allemande de maintenant, en général en fait ?

   Il y a DJ Hell du label Gigolo alors avec qui j'ai travaillé, avec qui on a commencé avec Miss Kittin. Pour moi il reste quelqu'un de très important parce que c'est lui qui nous a découvert, parce qu'on a signé en Allemagne avec Miss Kittin au début et c'est lui qui musicalement m'a fait, pas découvrir des choses, mais c'est lui qui m'a fait réalisé, qui m'a dit utilise tes propres influences, Depeche Mode tout ça, et arrête d'essayer de copier les autres les mecs technos, ce que je faisais à mes débuts un peu. Il m'a dit fait un truc plus personnel c'est pour ça que ça a été quelqu'un d'important et après en tant que dj j'aime beaucoup ce qu'il fait aussi en tant que musicien, producteur. Maintenant après il y en a d'autres : Sven Väth, Anthony Rother, des gens comme ça. Mais ce qui se passe en ce moment en Allemagne je trouve ça globalement "très chiant" en fait cette espèce de house minimale où il ne se passe rien c'est la même chose pendant des heures et tout ça ne me parle pas, ça m'ennuie en fait voilà. La musique techno ça vient un peu de là bas à la base. Un groupe comme Kraftwerk, je ne sais pas si vous connaissez, c'est un peu les pionniers de la musique électronique qui ne faisaient quasiment que de la techno dans les années 70. Donc c'est vrai que la musique électronique et l'Allemagne c'est une histoire qui existe depuis très longtemps. Plus qu'en France, enfin c'est encore un autre débat ça. Mais c'est vrai qu'il y a quelque chose de très fort là bas pour la musique électronique.

Il y a une Dj Allemande qui a monté son propre label, je ne me souviens plus de son nom...

   Il y en a plein hein! (rires) Ellen Allien?

Oui c'est ça on entend pas mal parler d'elle quand même...

   Ouais j'aime bien ce qu'elle fait d'ailleurs voilà. Si, il y a des gens comme ça que j'aime bien. J'ai dit que c'était chiant l'Allemagne mais il y a plein de gens que j'aime bien. Ellen llien j'aime beaucoup ce qu'elle fait, dj Hell et compagnie, ... Il y a des trucs intéressants, il ne faut pas non plus généraliser mais globalement le son qui marche en Allemagne ça me fait un peu chier.


Donc maintenant on va passer a des questions un peu ...
   Perso? (rires)

Non! un peu moins sérieuses et un peu plus barrées!


8.  Le verre est-il à moitié plein ou à moitié vide ?
   Je préfère dire qu'il est a moitié plein.

En fait cette question est une référence au nom du label Good Life ...
   Pourquoi?

On est parties dans un délire, on a trouvé que c'était assez positif comme nom...
   Ben ouais, on a choisi ce nom Good Life, bon c'est vieux hein parce que l'on se disait finalement regarde la vie des djs, des soirées c'est cool, c'est la belle vie, c'est machin... C'est aussi en référence à un des premiers morceaux technos qui s'appelait Good Life, aussi un truc de Detroit des années 80. Mais en ce moment je suis dans une phase assez positive on va dire dans ma vie donc j'ai envie de dire oui le verre est plutôt à moitié plein.


9. Est-ce que les gens te confondaient avec un hacker (comme pirate informatique) à tes débuts ? Ou même maintenant ? Est-ce que tu le prend bien ? 

   Oui ça arrive encore un peu. Je m'en moque c'est compréhensible et c'est d'autant plus drôle que je suis nul en informatique. Si j'ai pris ce nom c'est par rapport à un titre de morceau d'un de mes artistes technos préférés qui s'appelle Jeff Mills. Il y a un de ses tout premiers morceaux qui s'appelle The Hacker, je trouvais que ça sonnait bien et voilà rien à voir avec les ordinateurs. Je sais juste envoyer des mails, aller sur Facebook et c'est tout. C'est déjà ça!


10. La recette du gratin dauphinois?

   Aaaaaaaaaaah! Je sais qu'il faut juste : pommes de terres, crème fraîche ,un peu de lait. Maintenant la durée de cuisson et autre, je ne pourrais pas te dire...

Pas de touche personnelle à rajouter pour que ce soit meilleur?

   Ah non non non, il faut être super fidèle après ce n'est plus du gratin dauphinois si on commence à rajouter du fromage râpé des trucs, ça n'a rien à voir!


11. J'avais une autre question par rapport aux tournées, mais tu as déjà un peu répondu - Est-ce que ce n'est pas déprimant d'être en tournée, parce que pour les djs ça joue presque toujours la nuit donc c'est un certain rythme a prendre et quand tu reviens de ça...

   Non globalement non. C'est un rythme à prendre, mais ça fait bientôt 15 ans que je fais ça et je ne pense pas que l'on soit en position de se plaindre non plus en fait. Après c'est un choix de vie aussi mais je suis prêt à vivre ça encore 15 ans, ça va! Il n'y a pas de problèmes! (rires)

12. C'est aussi la soirée pour dévoiler la prog de astropolis, tu as pu regardé un peu? ça commence par Jeff Mills, un peu de French Touch n°2...

   Globalement la prog est vachement bien, après ce dont tu parles la french touch n°2 moi ça ne me parle pas plus que ça. Ca veut peut-être dire que je suis un vieux con!
   La plupart ne savent pas mixer leur live, ce ne sont pas des lives, c'est que de l'esbroufe. Mais en même temps j'ai l'impression que le public n'en a rien à faire de ça. De toute façon tu te dis je ne sais pas trop quoi en penser mais en même temps voilà, ils font ce qu'ils veulent. Ca ne me branche pas musicalement le repère du Daft Punk c'est bon je connais, j'ai compris mais ça ne me parle pas, ça ne me touche pas.

Et ce soir il y a Mondkopf tu connais? Il ne fait pas le même style...
   Je connais de nom mais je n'ai jamais vraiment entendu en fait donc on verra ce soir. Pourquoi pas en même temps j'ai rien contre ça. Mais bon voilà, entre la minimale chiante en Allemagne et la french touch n°2, je ne m'y retrouve pas trop en ce moment, je me fais un peu chier... donc voilà! (rires)
