Cooking recipes : Cheesecake

The original cheesecake comes from New-York and you can have it with some red fruit filler. There are several possibilities to make this fresh and unctuous cake.

Preparation : 10 minutes
Cooking time : 40 minutes

Ingredients (for 6 people) :

Bottom of the cake :
- 200g of speculos biscuits (or other biscuits)
- 80g of butter

Topping :
- 1kg of 'St Moret' cheese (or 3 'family' cans) - or other fresh cheese.
- 150g of sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tea spoon of liquid vanilla

extra :
- red fruit filler

Preparation :

Preheat the oven at 180°C (power 6). Put the speculos in the mixer to obtain a powder, than mix it with melted butter. Put the mixture on the bottom of the mould (anti adhesive is better), tamp it, and put in the oven for 10 minutes. Mix the cheese with the sugar, the eggs and the vanilla (it would be better to do it with the mixer, to get an almost liquid preparation). Pour the mixture on the already cooked biscuits preparation.

Cook it in the oven for 25 to 35 minutes according to your oven effectiveness (the less you cook it, the more creamy it will be).

Let it cool down and put it in the fridge for 4 hours minimum, one night being the best.
Serve with red fruit filler.

Interview : The Hacker (eng)

Saturday 24th Sept, Renaissance Man, Théo Gravil and The Hacker were doing a show in Rennes. We took the chance to present you an old old interview, done at the "Astro gets naked" night (Brest). Not the 2011 edition though, but the 2010! ! ISpecial interview for people who say "I don't know who The Hacker is" (don't worry, we didn't before either). We had fun, and not just a bit.

1. Could you introduce yourself for our readers who don't know who you are please?
So my stage name is The Hacker, I am from Grenoble, I'm 37 years old and I make electronic music since roughly 15 years now. I am mainly known for my project with Miss Kittin, and also for some side projects alone, which are more of a techno and dark electro kind, let's say. More or less...

2. You are a lot quoted as a pioneer and anchor of the techno music scene. Why do you think it is so?
Simply because it's been a while since I am in the business. I really started at the beginning of the 90s, when rave parties appeared, so around 92/93. So I think it's because of that that people look at me like a pioneer and maybe because I am old! That must be it! (laughs)

3. You created your own record company "Good Life". According to you, what are the advantages and inconvenients of having your own label?
The advantages are that you can publish the music that you want, that you like without asking yourself too many questions. The inconvenients are that these are small structures so it is always a bit difficult to promote and all because it costs money and things like that. This may be the inconvenient but in the mean time it still is something interesting to do, artistically speaking I think. Trying to develop things that you really like, and then either it works or not you can see, and generally it's more positive than negative.

What was the motivation to create this label? because you couldn't find the structures that you liked?
Just the envy of publishing the music that we really like.

Could you tell us what you are most proud of?
The music that we made, my colleagues - I want to say - and me : Oxia, Kiko, these are people from Grenoble too - my own stuff, ... I am proud of it all actually, there's no particular thing.

4. You should be releasing a new album soon...
   So I've heard!
So have we read too! And it should be named "Black Hole"?
No, this one is out! Black Hole has been released no so long ago! It's just a EP like that, so there are 3 songs and it has been released on a label called White Noise. It's the label of an english dj, rather well known, called Dave Clark and the last stracks I did are quite representative of the music I make nowadays.

And it works quite well for you right now, we have seen on your facebook page. Your first fans seem quite happy that you can go back to a sound more...
Yeah a harder sound maybe. It's true it's working quite well yes!

5. Do movies influence the way you make music, and if yes which ones?
There are a few things that influenced me, but maybe I don't have a particular exemple in mind. Perhaps it is less true nowadays, but a few years ago I was very influenced by everything science-fiction and fantasy actually, because they had this atmosphere that matched with myself; always a bit mysterious, a bit dark and I liked all that. There are some soundtracks from the 60/70s that I like a lot because they have the first synthesizers, the first electronic sounds and I like this kind of atmosphere. There are also movies that influenced whith their own atmosphere, it could be the first Alien, Village of the Damned and old science-fiction thing, it could also be the first Nosferatu in the 20s, in black and white. This kind of things I like.

6. What tracks are you listening to nowadays?
Right now, probably there is no track in particular, but I listen to a lot of techno whereas strangely it has been some time, I mean that I have been listenning to it at home. There is a band that I have been listenning to since 25 years and probably that I will listen to all my life, it's Depeche Mode. I am kind of non-stop on that right now.

7. Do you have some artists fomr the german scene to advice?
Eeeeeeh, no! (laughs) No but yes, I mean I exagerate but right now I am...

Not especially from nowadays scene, but like in general?
Then there is DJ Hell from the Gigolo Records with who I have been working, and with who we started with Miss Kittin. For me, he is still somebody very important because he's the one that discovered us, because we signed in germany with Miss Kittin at the beginning and musically speaking, it is him who made me, not discover things, but it is him who made me realise, who said "use your own influences", Depeche Mode and all, and stop trying  copying the other techno guys, which was what I did a bit at the beginning. He told me to make something a bit more personnal, and that's why he has been somebody important, and somebody that I like as a dj, musician and producer. There are some other people too : Sven Väth, Anthony Rother, people like that. But what is happening now in Germany, globally I think it's "very boring", this sort of minimal house where nothing is happening, it is the same thing for hours, it's not appealing to me, it's boring me actually. The bases of the techno music come from there. A band like Kraftwerk, I don't know if you have heard of them, there are like the pioneers of the electronic music, and there were making almost only techno music in the 70s. So it is true that electronic music and Germany is a long story. More than in France, but this is another debate. But it's true that there is something very strong there for electronic music.

There is a german dj girl who started her own label, I can't remember her name...
There are a lot you know! (laughs) Ellen Allien?

Yes, that's her! You can hear a lot of talking about her still...
Yeah, I like what she does by the way. There are people like that that I like. I said Germany was boring, but there's a lot of people I like. Ellen Allien I like a lot what she does actually, DJ Hell and all... There are some interesting stuffs, we should'nt be too general but globally the "buzz" sound in Germany makes me bored.

So now we are gonna ask questions more...
   personnal? (laughs)
No! less serious and more crazy...

8. Is the glass half empty or half full?
I prefer to say that it is half full.

Actually, this question is a reference to yor label "Good Life".
   Why?

We got into some jokes, we thought it was quite a positive name...
Yeah, right, we picked this name Good Life, so it's old right, because we were saying to ourselves : look at the djs' lives, fun nights out, that's the life, that's it... It's also a reference to one of the first techno tracks that's called Good Life, something from Detroit in the 80s. But right now I am in a positive side of my life, we could say, so I want to say yes, the glass is half full.

9. Did people though you were a computer hacker at the beginning? or even now? How do you react?
Yes it still happens a bit. I don't care, it's understandable and it's even funnier as I am lame in computing. If I took this name it is for the relation to one of my favorite techno artists, Jeff Mills. There is one of his first tracks which is called The Hacker, I thought It sounded nice so there, nothing to do with computers. I can only send emails, go on Facebook, and that's all. Better than nothing!

10. Do you know the recipe of the "gratin dauphinois"?
Aaaaaaaaaah! I only know you need : potatoes, fresh cream, a bit of milk. Now, about the cooking time and all, I can't tell you...

No personal ingredient to make it better?
No no no, you have to be extremely faithful, otherwise it is no "gratin dauphinois", if you start adding cheese and stuff, it has nothing to do with it anymore!

11. I had another question about the tours, but you kind of answered already. Isn't it depressing to be on the roas, because for djs it mostly at night that you are playing, so it is a different rhythm to take and when it stops...
Generally no. It is another rhythm to adapt to, but it's been almost 15 years that I am doing it and I don't we are in a position to complain actually. After , it is also a choice of lifestyle, but I am ready to live it 15 more years, It's ok! There's no problem! (laughs)

12. Tonight is the official party for the release of the festival's program, did you have time to take a look? It starts with Jeff Mills, a little French Touch N°2, ...
Globally the program is really good, after what you talk about the french touch n°2, it is not that much appealing to me. Maybe it means I am an old shrimp!
Most of them don't know how to mix, their gigs aren't live, it's all swagger. But in the mean time I have the feeling that audiences don't care about that. Anyway, you tell yourself I don't know what to think about it, but in the mean time they have the right to do what they want. It is not appealing for me musically speaking, Daft Punk's GQ I already know, I undersand, but it is not for me.

And tonight there is Mondkopf opening for you, do you know him? He doesn't exactly have the same style...
I know his name but I haven't really heard his music yet, so it will be for tonight. Why not actually, I have nothing against it. But let's be honest, between boring minimal house in Germany and french touch n°2, I can't relate myself to it at the moment, I'm getting a little dull ... So voilà! (laughs)

The Horrors and Simple Plan? This should not surprise you, it should attract you! Somewhat. Back in 2010, we went to the as volunteers and it had been a great experience. They know too how to mix genres and audiences. The technical team is the best and the scenery is dreamy - you’re literally dancing on the beach. The camping is messy but you have to try it and go to the before party- there are not many people partyng, but it is rad! Everyone will be pleased and you’ll be even more delighted if you enjoy dancing on a good rock song.

A Second First South Central Album

South Central - Society Of The Spectacle
(released April 4th 2011 on Egregore)

The story of our webzine 100% Sucre is deeply connected to South Central. They were the first band we ever interviewed and we were head over heels when we first saw them live, just as many other fans were. Correct me if I am wrong but I think they are the only band to have played three consecutive times at the Rencontres Trans Musicales- in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
They were playing at the Citizen Party in Rennes last Friday. It was an opportunity to chat a little bit and get our hands on their last record.
In 2009, this English duet- they are actually from Malta, but let’s pretend they are bi-nationals- had released their first album, which was not an album per say. The Owls of Minerva gathered the songs that had previously been released as singles. As Rob says, “it has become a true record, as the songs fit together and create meaning”.
On April 4th, Society Of The Spectacle will finally be out, after many years of waiting. It will be released on their own label called Egregore, and will feature A Place To Bury Strangers on The Moth, and Gary Numan, APTBS’s leader, on Crawl. The record scored number one in Japan for three days, just before the tsunami changed the order of things.

A record like this one makes you want to dance all along, that is for 48 minutes. We will travel from one song to another, but I still believe that you have to listen to the records yourselves- music cannot be described; you have to listen to it.
It starts with the powerful Nu Control, where a disembodied voice repeats for about five minutes that it controls a “big sound”. It almost makes me feel uncomfortable.
Then The Day I Die plays; it sounds more like pop. Some people were shocked by the video clip; I think it is meaningful, especially when considering what is going on in the world. It deals with fighting against death.
Bionic is the hip hop song of the record. It tells the story of a bionic and psychotic man.
The next song is a classic; it had already been released a few years ago. We all are Demons. You will not be able to resist it.
A deep voice whispers S.O.S. into your ears. The initial of all the sentences in this song are S.O.S.
Do not have regrets otherwise there is No Way Back. I picture a video clip with monks for this song.
The Fourth Way is an instrumental- one of those who send you to another world.
Now that you are in a trance state, the thumping Paris In The Twentieth Century will eventually calm you down. It is a very sensual song.
Anima, which means “spirit” in Latin, does deal with a spirit.
Then the genius Gary Numan arrives and he has many questions to ask about Keith and Rob’s music. He can Crawl really well among the devastating rhythmic.
The title track Society of the Spectacle is an instrumental in which South Central’s knowledge and style are fully expressed. It is a masterpiece.
Take a bite of A Place To Bury Strangers –they’re happiness- and add some South Central; you get ecstasy. The Moth is definitely a hit.

Let’s hit the replay button!

I would like to say a few words about the artwork. The album cover is divided into three parts. Some of the songs’ lyrics are written on the sleeves. The theme of the pictures is the eye - they scare me.
South Central is not done yet. Their next record is already being prepared and they promised that they would release it soon. They will also be touring with musicians. In the meantime you can go see the best electro band of the world – according to me, but also to Jean-Louis Brossard, director of the Trans Musicales- live around the country.

Playlist St Valentin // Valentine's Day

- - - - - - - - - -

Finding songs about love in order to create a valentine's day playlist is pretty easy (especially for modern rnb songs). I had then decided to make it a little harder, and take as a theme "those girls who stole the love of others". Thanks to an insufficient internet connexion, on the 13th there were only 2 songs to present. I then made a quick search through my music library, and that is what came up. A kind of short general love story, with songs from different styles, but caried by women's voices. Instead of being a perfectly studied and synchronised playlist (I could have put so many more stuff, but it will wait until next year), I hope it will help you (re)discover a few artists and songs.
PS : this playlist was particularly made thinking about single people (it is not yet the time for being depressive, love is the same problem for everyone anyway).

Cooking Recipes : Homemade Pizza

For the batter you need

•    250g of flour
•    1 teaspoon of salt
•    1-2 soup spoon of olive oil
•    10g of yeast
•    1,5 dl of warmish water (not warm, not cold)

Procedure

Pour the flour into a big bowl, then add the salt. Mix it with a spoon or with your hands (don't forget to wash your hands before!).
Pour the water into a small bowl and add the yeast. Mix it very well, make sure that there are no “stones” of yeast in the liquid.
Make a volcano crater with your fist in the middle of the flour-mountain. In this crater, fill the yeast-water and the olive oil. Now strip up your sleeves and mix the batter with your hands. It should not be very sticky, so if the batter is too wet, add a bit of flour; if it is to dry (it shouldn't fall into pieces either), add water.
If you think your batter is heading perfection, put in (still in the big bowl, of course) on a warm place (e.g. on a heater). Now go to the kitchen and make yourself a coffee, because the batter needs some 30 minutes to grow.
If you see that the batter has increased his volume, it is ready to be rolled out. Find an adequate surface in your kitchen. Pour some flour on the surface to prevent the cake from sticking on it. Now roll the batter with a rolling-pin or a well-cleaned glass bottle into the shape of your oven form. Make sure that you roll it real thin, because it will become thicker in the oven. Spread some oil on the form surface and put the batter in it. Congrats, now the hardest work is done and the artistic part can begin!

For the topping you need

Well, actually there is no rule for the choice of the ingredients, so just buy stuff you like and pay a bit attention that it matches together (don't mix fish with pineapple).
Usually, the topping starts with tomato paste. Spread it on the ground of the batter. Then spice it with salt and pepper.
Now put the ingredients you have chosen and spice it again. Maybe put some greens (“the” green for Pizza is Oregano generally).
If you put some cheese, it is essential that you chose melting one, and put it on the very top, so that the Pizza will be scalloped with it.

If you make Pizza more often, you should think about preparing some hot oil. It is very easy to make but it is tasty. So just take one bottle of olive oil, and add chili peppers and some greens. After a few days, the oil gets a hot taste. You can pour a bit of it on your Pizza after it leaves the oven.

Video : BASTILLE - Flaws (& more)

Extracted from the movie 'Badlands' (1973), directed by Terrence Malick, with Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek.

When some people will agree on the fact that this is a weird choice of video, we will only discuss on the song's indie quality (meaning also very British). But, please know, that it is highly fashionable nowadays to make from movies' extracts your music video (some kind of Do It Yourself); and moreover, it is probably as 'good' as those videos in which teenagers so hype are having fun half-naked - thanks to TEA for those mainly.

BASTILLE is one guy only (Dan Smith). As for the rest, we don't know so much, appart from a certain aquaintance with another UK band 'To Kill A King' (who does really nice music as well).

On the contrary, what we can predict for sure is that it will do some damages among girls (at least) :
a young voice (can we even say sexy?), little synths fairly synchronised (! - like here a bit), a slight spacey side and therefore boldly indie (electronic drone effect), a happy side who is fighting over with a rather more melancolic and (deceptively) romantic side, and not so annoying lyrics. It has already worked for me, two hours spent listenning to this tune today, and I'm not even tired yet.

You will find two other songs of the same kind on the MySpace (maybe less catchy, but I'll let you be the judge of that), and one remix on SoundCloud (the streaming website for music, here again highly fashionable).

Another Great Impakt...

12th Edition - 5 / 9 October 2010.

Like each year, schools comeback in lower Normandie is to be done in Caen's area with the famous festival : Nordik Impakt.
This year, no coldness (usually the festival is held in early november) but rather a bright sun for the closing week-end. Maybe we could go with just one shirt? Anyway, we are still in Normandie and in evening time, so for this Nordik Incity (friday night), better plan to get sick the day after with the big closing night. This year, I went even the day before - I've been told about an off festival in town, plus a Tsugi night at Le Cargö (the city's gig venue for nowadays music), and I didn't need anything else to make me arrive one night earlier.

Scheduled for this night : Adam Kesher, Goose, Nasser, Mustard Pimp and Mr Maqs.
We arrived at Le Cargö and Adam Kesher is already done (what a shame!) and morevover Goose is already playing for several minutes apparently. The program was announcing a new project for the Belgium quartet and quite a lot of changes for their new album Synrise. Well, after two/three tracks, we can only say that it is still the same thing : rather edgy synthesizers added to a few guitare tunes from a rather insignificant pop. That is, it won't be today that I will start to like this kind of music.
In the small room next door, Mr Maqs is mixing, not so badly, and all styles; it makes you want to dance, it's fresh. We go again on the other side, the trio electronic-rock from Marseille "Nasser" will start. The specialised press announced that they might be the new Lcd Soundsystem... The journalist in question might be right, a very edgy music, drums, guitar and dj and here we go for one hour and a quarter of pleasure, a good discovery in short. We go back to the club scene, Mr Maqs keeps delivering his good little music, and it's still very fresh but it is rather late, and tomorrow the big ceremony will take place, so let's keep our strength and go to bed...

Let's get down to business, let's talk about the closing night.
Tonight we can't be late : electro's pope and main artist of the night is playing at 10.30 sharp. Maybe you already understood of who I'm talking about? I meant Sir Aphex Twin : aka Richard D. James for those who know him less. There are already a lot of people in the car park : bottles up, cans everywhere, and various sounds coming from cars as soundtrack. It is already 11 and I have to take my ticket at the invitational stand, but tiny problem : there is a quite long queue who doesn't seem to move very quickly. Thirty minutes later, there it is, I have my precious paper and I can go straight to the big stage to assist to the genius' show. No time for a drink, or tickets even, I have to be in the first ranks to appreciate at its best the talent of IDM sacred monster (intelligence dance music). As usual with Sir Aphex the last half hour is going in various unsimilar directions, and it is really hard to recognize all of his compositions but at least I know what he didn't play (more or less) : Come to daddy, Boxing Day, Girlboy, Windowlicker. And as each good show who has self respect, there is not only music, there are also visuals : a wall of at least a hundred meters long, covered by entangled triangles and more visuals covering them up, a creation by ANTIVJ. It gives us, in the end, a movie with the audience's faces transforming into Aphex Twin's own face. Simply incredible and a never seen before for me.
The show is of course ending too soon, it's a shame that he was on so early and blame on me for not paying attention to the time before. Now, place to Adam Beyer's tasty techno.

Before talking more about our show, let's review the festival scenes. This year, the Nordik Impakt (closing night) took place on three stages : the big stage (main floor), the second floor - with for decoration 12 pikes disposed in circle and representing the hours of a clock; the bar being in between this representation and the stage with its 3D screen to boost the dj's shows, and the 'lost floor' that I will call 'the beach' (you will understand why later).
Let's go back to the main floor, and on for Mr Adam Beyer. His 'tek housse' that I knew few of is making its effect : it's powerful, minimal as it should, without being annoying : perfect program's choice for the ArtsAttack team (few big artists, but quality names for live sets of one hour thirty, even two hours for some).
We hurry to the second floor to discover Jack Beats, little prodige, so they say, of bassline. And it was a very good discovery, no whoring electronic like Ed-Banger, but rather a big bass to remix the best tracks of nowadays, and to give a beautiful conclusion with the boisterous song 'Get Down' that I recommand for all lovers of the kind.
It is already 3 o'clock in the morning, it's now the turn for one of the biggest figure of dubstep to start : Benga, aka Beni Uthman : big bass, big sound raging all the way. Yes, it is still the same that I saw in Dour and twice in Paris, but it's still that good. For those who would like to know more about the guy, I would advise to have a listen to the bombastic songs he's producing right now.
Damn! 1h30 is going so quickly when we are in a gig, and now I only know Don Rimini for the rest of the night but it isn't a problem since it is time for discoveries. The second floor is proposing drum n'bass, and I'm going to see how A.MOCHI is doing, one of the reference for japanese's techno. It isn't really my type of thing, techno without much flavour and quite difficult to alternate with repeated and 'quiet' rhythms, when you just spent one hour and a half to jump like crazy on big violents basslines.
Therefore, I go to familirize myself with the Lost Floor and its thin sand, and who says sand says lazyness, says also beach chair. And it's quite good since there is one line of those next to the scene. Incredible once again, this Nordik Impakt is quite well organised. We then found ourselves laying in those chairs, moving like stupid on Don Rimini's quite explosive set. In any case, it is way better than in Dour or in a club (playing for fluokids, electro teenager version).
The energy is filled up so we can hang until the end of the night, we decide to see if we can still find love for the hardcore scene. This year it's Maissouille who is there, but if parties are good to discover violent electro, it is too repetitive and agressive at this hour; I can't even handle it for fifteen minutes!
Not really a problem, since Len Faki (Berlin's Berghain Club's resident) already started his show and on for more than 2 hours of devilish techno. We often say than the best is kept for the end : it is true, definitely the best moment of the weekend and as well the best discovery. A minimal techno quite  mindtaking and dancing even if it is still techno and that it is rather difficult to 'dance to the max'.
Anyway, like I was saying, the guy is handling it like a pro, it shows that he is most pleased to play here, with for proof, 20 minutes of extra show, and as the festival end's song : Dead By Housse. Genius, simply magical and for all the style's lovers who didn't know it yet.

And another success... Nordik Impakt is THE meeting for electronic music's lovers in the north of france. Amazing visuals (congratulations in order for antivj), great spaces to relax to, and as usual, a program more than pertinent, giving what we are proposed elsewhere.
Two last words before the usual top/flop : congrats and thanks!

Top
1. Len Faki
2. Adam Beyer
3. Aphex Twin / Benga

Flop
1. Aphex Twi's set (way too early)
2. Waiting to get your pass back
3. Ed Banger's people on the Last Floor stage from 23h30 to 4h00 (you will say : there should be for everyone, and i should reply i need a third flop")

TONIGHT : Transmusicales

On Monday, Transmusicales 2010 began for me, I am as every year very excited. Here is a selection of "those that we already saw and we know that it is great" and of "those we have not seen yet but we know that is going to be brilliant or at least good" (to be added to the previous videos' selection).

On n'oublie pas de regarder le blog pour se tenir au courant des annulations (comme tous les ans il y en aura), des soirées complètes (comme tous les ans, au moins une au parc expo).

// Don't forget to check out the official blog for latests news (cancels, sold out nights because there will be!).

Transmusicales J-10 : Djak (video)

10 days away from the festival,
it s high time that we pay a tribute to those who are saving our winter,
and are making us say : "there is always session 2" (for the university's exams), "can't wait 'til next year", and "I wanna go back".

Rather than making you sleep with long descriptions, we picked up a few videos,
so than you can judge yourself of the bands' good tastes (or not).
Includes artists from Bars en Trans (the off festival).

Never forget to

•    wash your hands before cooking :)
•    put salt into the water if you are boiling rice, pasta etc.
•    put older eggs first into a cup and check if they are not smelling yet before putting them into the meal (same for milk)

Gig Review : Clubbing Night for 'Cultures Elektroni[K] 2010'

Clubbing Night - Cultures Electroni[K]
10.14.2010 @ Ubu, Rennes.

Dye, Bot'ox, Logo, Superpitcher.

Doors-11 pm. A few people got in as the show slowly began. Dye started deejaying and gave a nice rhythm while the crowd got more numerous. After local bars closing time, the venue became crowded, and alcohol flowed. The beginning of the set was not very good but it ended in a marvelous way.

Bot’Ox played next, and they really impressed me. The duo transformed itself on stage, and into a quartet, playing guitar, bass, drums, and machines. The clubbers enjoyed this and got crazy on the sticky dance floor. There was a mask of a giant head on stage. The rather long songs punctuated with cries produced ecstasy in the audience. Everything was fluid, energetic and powerful.

Logo have recently been signed up by French label Kitsuné -smart one, it is a fresh and dancing bomb! It had been a while since I made a discovery like this one. I think I am still not over it. They made it straight to my DJs top list alongside Brodinski, Mondkopf or South Central. I would just say one thing- go see them live! I heard it was one of their first live performances, and I have to say they sounded really great.

To end it all beautifully, German Superpitcher got on stage. I don’t really know what to say about him- I only listened to the beginning of the set. It was awesome, but I had an early train to catch the morning after so I headed back home to sleep.

Album Review : Surfer Blood - Astrocoast

Surfer Blood – Astrocoast
US release : January 2010

Surfer Blood are touring with hype band The Drums, but it’s not the reason why we’ll talk about their album. No, it’s not. It’s rather because I felt attracted to the crazy and weird music video for their song Swim. Released as the second single from the record, it is still relatively unknown in France. I personally could not stop listening to the album.
I don’t think one is supposed to put words on this UFO, or qualify it as anything, but that's certainly a colourful album, which mixes loads of styles and influences. And I said loads.

Writing this review, I realised that all the words I could write down would make you think they make pop music, but when you listen to the album, it’s not that simple.
The guitars make it sound like pop music, but in the end it sounds more like post-rock. The voices are slightly crakling or are given a special tone thanks to a pedal resonance effect. It gives an old-fashioned / soft side to it, without being corny. Also, you can hear violins in Floating Vibes, and xylophones in Fast Jabroni. They both bring complexity to the songs. The bass line is really nice, as well as the drums in Harmonix or the child voices in Twin Peaks – even cats' sounds?
The album sounds indie on the first two songs, while the rest flows to our ears, putting us in a perplexed state of mind. We are then left with the last two songs, which are definitely non-indie. It is within the songs themselves that you find this mix of influences. You have to expect an unexpected turn at every note- bridges and interludes are here very different from the rest of the songs. The lyrics are more ‘coherent’, since the titles illustrate well the themes that are dealt with.
One thing is sure- this is a very indie and extremely promising album.

Here is a - partial - list of bands I thought of while listening to the album- maybe it will make you want to listen to it, or will just give you an idea of what it sounds like: Sonic Youth, Islands, Foals, The Penelope(s) & Morpheus, We Are Scientists, Annuals, The Big Pink, Dinosaur Jr. (they claimed they are a big influence), Fanfarlo, Pavement, Best Coast, A Place To Bury Strangers,...
I believe that if – in a hypothetical world - The Horrors were born in Florida, were tanned, and were not wearing black; their second album might have sounded like this one.

Interview Liars - eng

[10.27.10 – Antipode, Rennes]

After seeing them this summer at the French festival La Route du Rock, we were dying to discover what a Liars’ concert sounded like. Before the gig started we interviewed Angus Andrew, the band’s front man.

1. Many people over here in Rennes have seen you at La Route du Rock. Did you enjoy the festival? Do you think it was a good one?

Angus: Hum, I am trying to remember, was it the one where Gang of Four played?
100%: No, it wasn’t.
A: Was it out door, in an old Napoleon style building? Yeah, that was really fun, I liked it. We’ve played there before, many years ago. I had a good time playing at that festival. I remember we had a lot of technical problems- many things went wrong. You know we always go through hell getting ready for a gig. But yeah, it was fun; I like big stages like this one. And The Flaming Lips played too, didn’t they?
100%: Yes!
A: Were they good?
100%: Yes, really awesome. Even if you don’t like that kind of music, you’ve got to be impressed by what they do on stage.

2. Concerning your last album Sisterworld, can you tell us more about the artwork? Where does the photo come from?

A: What happened basically is that we’d been working on the record in Los Angeles for a long time, and we were talking about this idea of trying to separate oneself from the influence of society, thinking about those places that you need to find to be able to connect with yourself again. And those were very theoretical ideas until we decided that we would take a trip to California without listening to any music. We just walked in the forest, took photos and shot videos. It is the idea that we were trying to convey in this record. That's where the artwork comes from; putting ourselves in a position where we kind of physically felt what we were talking about in the record.

3. Do you think that the artwork have an important part to play in music?

A: Lately it hasn’t because of the end of the CDs era. But I think it’s actually now becoming more important because people want to own more than just a piece of paper and a CD. I think it’s important in this day and age not just to point out the finger at people who do not buy records, but also that we, as artists, make a product that is actually worth buying. Something that is attractive, that you can hold and really like. Most of the time, people don’t want CDs; they’d rather download files on their I-Pod or computer. But I think there is room for creating things that people enjoys buying. That’s why we wanted the cover to be a kind of 3D picture.

4. Liars have been playing for ten years in various line-ups, and Sisterworld is album number five. Do you ever think about what Liars will be doing in ten years?

A: I don’t know, I don’t think about it too much. It’s weird to even think we’ve been making music for ten years. But to answer this question, I’ll just cross my fingers and hope that we’ll make another five records and that I’ll be as happy as I am now with the latest one.

100%: In ten years you’ve become a big influence for many bands.

A: Yeah, it’s really amazing to see how everything works. Because there are so many bands; and every day new bands are formed. Sometimes I forget that they actually know about us and listen to us. Whether it’s important or not, it’s interesting to know that our music affects other people’s music. I think I’m pretty proud of that. Because the influence we have is more spiritual than musical. It’s all about being faithful to your beliefs and doing what you think is right.

5. Some people say this album is dark. Do you think it’s a good thing?

A: I agree with them, I wanted to make a dark record. Sometimes when I think about the lyrics and some other things I said, I get a bit chocked by these dark aspects I found in myself. I wanted to reveal the darkest part in me.

6. Others say it deals with the “loss of self in society”. What does that mean?

A: It means that I often find it difficult to see where I fit in society. It’s particularly difficult in Los Angeles because everyone is really beautiful and smiling and wealthy and all, and sometimes you just wonder why you’re not a part of it! It’s the same feeling when you’re watching TV or else. Sometimes it feels like you can’t really understand who they’re making all this for. It’s not for you. Sometimes I feel like I’m left out of the world, I believe that there are other people who feel this way too. So I make a record to help those people find a way to discover themselves again and not to be worried about what society is saying they should be.

7. Do you consider yourself as optimistic or pessimistic?

A: Oh, that’s an interesting question! I think I’m an optimist, I look forward to things, I don’t dread much. I also like to think that I’m a realist; it’s like cutting it in the middle, because I think there is a problem with being either too optimistic or too pessimistic.

8. What bands should we be listening to?

A: There is this hip hop band from Los Angeles called Odd Future. They‘re pretty interesting; they actually covered one of our songs; that’s how we heard of them. They’re really young, they‘re skateboarders and I really like what they’re doing.

9. What is your favourite book and why? You don’t have to pick only one.

A: There‘s a book called Remainder by Tom McCarthy. He’s an English writer and it was actually his first book. It was released a couple of years ago. I really, really enjoyed that book; it calls into question the role of art in life. And throughout the book there is this interesting idea of trying to recreate art in life and how problematic that can be.

10. Could you give me a cooking recipe?

A: The best thing that I can cook is an old Australian recipe, because that’s where I’m from. It’s called meat pie. Basically you need to brown some onions and some mice beef and mushrooms. Then you need to make a pastry and full it all together and put it in the oven.
